Thoughts on using new paint…
So let me start off by stating that I’m no expert on, nor am I claiming to be even that good at graffiti. But I have gone through enough cans to be able to form an opinion of paint and how I use it.
I’ve been experimenting and learning how to paint for just over a year now. During that year I have become a huge fan of Ironlak for a few reasons: coverage, color choices, smell and low pressure. I have bought every can of paint except for a few from Oink Art Ltd. (awesome folks, great prices and killer selection). Like the song goes, “you can’t always get what you want…” and so it goes…Oink’s stock of Ironlak has been low lately. Not faulting them, not at all. Well this has presenting me with a dilemma: paint less (my stock is also getting low) or try something new. It was going to have to be new since I didn’t want to paint less.
I ordered about 20 cans of SABOTAZ. I was blown away by the color choices (120) and intrigued to try a medium pressure can (that would allow me some different cap choices the Ironlak low pressure didn’t work with), and it price tag was also nice. In a matter of days my front stoop had a box from Oink and I had a smile on my face.
That night I went out back to give it a try. My first impression was pretty good until the odor smacked me in the face. This paint stinks. Literally. And not just a little - it forced me to put my respirator on (which I should do anyway). So that was strike one.
Using a fat cap, I started to outline my piece. This was smooth and predictable. The paint color was nice (a bit thin - and more on that soon) but it did the trick. Then strike two. Once I got the can a little closer for the fill it just looked watery. It puddled up and wanted to run. I tried a few different caps with the same results. The only way to prevent the puddles was to hold the can farther away - which makes thin lines and detail work really impossible for my amateur skill sets.
Strike three came with the lack of coverage. This paint seems very thin to me. Lighter colors didn’t cover darker colors on the first pass and barely covered on the second and third pass. Now maybe I’m spoiled with Ironlak’s great coverage but…
I’ll obviously use up the Sabotaz and maybe learn how to make the best use of it’s limitations. Just my 2 cents - I don’t care for it.
